MWA were appointed to deliver a 35-bedroom care home within the Grade I listed Diorama Building, working in collaboration with a premium care home provider.
The proposals comprise a change of use of the Diorama Building (No. 18), including the removal of restrictions limiting occupation to charitable and institutional uses, a roof extension to provide additional third-floor accommodation, and a series of sensitive internal alterations. These include the introduction of two passenger lifts to provide step-free access, upgraded male and female WC provision, and revised fire escape arrangements.
The scheme restores the original spatial hierarchy of the Diorama, re-establishes the rotunda, and improves legibility and orientation between floors. Careful consideration was given to the setting of the Nash façade, ensuring that new internal interventions remain subordinate to the neoclassical envelope, alongside the reinstatement of a roof form informed by the building’s historic configuration. These principles were developed through early consultation, pre-application discussions, and carried through to the consented scheme.
All bedrooms are provided with walk-in en-suite showers to support independent living. Communal spaces are arranged to support regular interaction between residents and staff, responding to the operational requirements of the care home.
