MWA have submitted a planning application for the redevelopment of an office building in the Clerkenwell Green Conservation Area within the London Borough of Islington. The Clerkenwell Green Conservation Area is significant as it is Islington’s oldest conservation area, with many buildings dating back to medieval times. The existing building was constructed in the 1930’s and is a good example of a light industrial building typical of the area. The building has suffered from a number of unsympathetic extensions over its lifetime.
MWA’s proposals look to consolidate and de-clutter the various extensions and infills that the building has sustained over the last 70 years by considering the properties’ proportions and existing grid formed by fenestration and details. The property is made up of two buildings from basement, ground and five upper floors. Proposals look to remove non-original extensions and build a facsimile fourth floor, with an additional fifth floor setback, terrace and plant room enclosure.
