MWA are pleased to share proposals for a new country estate in Oxfordshire, designed in direct response to its landscape and surrounding local character. Boasting distant views of the countryside and enveloped by open woodland, the project offers a rare opportunity to work at scale within a historically sensitive rural setting.
The design draws on detailed research into the vernacular of the English country estate and Jacobean houses of the 17th century. Referencing regional precedents, the proposal features stone mullioned windows, shaped gables and a symmetrically composed principal elevation. These elements are organised around a central axial gallery, establishing a formal sequence through the house. The overall arrangement reflects the historic planning of manor houses while responding to the site’s topography, views and approach.
This project expands our portfolio into large scale country estates, applying our design approach to a highly bespoke brief and a historically sensitive setting.
